Because the rules of nomenclature stipulated that the name of a species should be the oldest name ever applied to it, Merriam therefore selected the name of Leidy's 1858 specimen, C. By 1912 he had found a skeleton sufficiently complete to be able to formally recognize these and the previously found specimens under the name C. In 1908 the paleontologist John Campbell Merriam began retrieving numerous fossilized bone fragments of a large wolf from the Rancho La Brea tar pits. As so little was found of these three specimens, Allen thought it best to leave each specimen listed under its provisional name until more material could be found to reveal their relationship. dirus (Leidy 1858) and Canis indianensis (Leidy 1869). In 1876 the zoologist Joel Asaph Allen discovered the remains of Canis mississippiensis (Allen 1876) and associated these with C. Display at the Page Museum of 404 dire wolf skulls found in the La Brea Tar Pits primaevus had previously been used by the British naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson for the dhole. primaevus (Leidy 1854) was later renamed Canis indianensis (Leidy 1869) when Leidy found out that the name C. In 1857, while exploring the Niobrara River valley in Nebraska, Leidy found the vertebrae of an extinct Canis species that he reported the following year under the name C. Norwood's letters to Leidy are preserved along with the type specimen (the first of a species that has a written description) at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The paleontologist Joseph Leidy determined that the specimen represented an extinct species of wolf and reported it under the name of Canis primaevus. The fossilized jawbone with cheek teeth was obtained by the geologist Joseph Granville Norwood from an Evansville collector, Francis A. The first specimen of what would later become associated with Aenocyon dirus was found in mid-1854 in the bed of the Ohio River near Evansville, Indiana. Dire wolves lived as recently as 9,500 years ago, according to dated remains.įrom the 1850s, the fossil remains of extinct large wolves were being found in the United States, and it was not immediately clear that these all belonged to one species. Its reliance on megaherbivores has been proposed as the cause of its extinction, along with climatic change and competition with other species, or a combination of those factors. Its extinction occurred during the Quaternary extinction event along with its main prey species. These characteristics are thought to be adaptations for preying on Late Pleistocene megaherbivores, and in North America, its prey is known to have included western horses, ground sloths, mastodons, ancient bison, and camels. lupus, but its teeth were larger with greater shearing ability, and its bite force at the canine tooth was stronger than any known Canis species. Its skull and dentition matched those of C. guildayi weighed on average 60 kilograms (132 lb) and A. The dire wolf was about the same size as the largest modern gray wolves ( Canis lupus): the Yukon wolf and the northwestern wolf. However, the 2020 discovery of dire wolf fossils in northeast China indicates that dire wolves had crossed Beringia when it existed. This range restriction is thought to be due to temperature, prey, or habitat limitations imposed by proximity to the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets that existed at the time. Dire wolf fossils have rarely been found north of 42°N latitude there have been only five unconfirmed reports above this latitude. The sites range in elevation from sea level to 2,255 meters (7,400 ft). The largest collection of its fossils has been obtained from the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.ĭire wolf remains have been found across a broad range of habitats including the plains, grasslands, and some forested mountain areas of North America, the arid savanna of South America, and the steppes of eastern Asia. Two subspecies are recognized: Aenocyon dirus guildayi and Aenocyon dirus dirus. The species was named in 1858, four years after the first specimen had been found. The dire wolf lived in the Americas and eastern Asia during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene epochs (125,000–9,500 years ago). It is one of the most famous prehistoric carnivores in North America, along with its extinct competitor Smilodon. The dire wolf ( Aenocyon dirus / iː ˈ n ɒ s aɪ.

Product Overview Description Details: Great Art Deserves to be on Canvas Unlike thin posters and paper prints, Giclee canvas artwork offers the texture, look and feel of fine-art paintings. Among other things, Talbot invented the photographic negative from which positive prints could be made - allowing for the mass reproduction of images. Talbot was a brilliant polymath who made important discoveries in fields as diverse as calculus, astronomy, and the translation of cuneiform texts, but it was his frustration with his inability to capture nature with a pencil that led him to develop what he called 'the art of photogenic drawing'. Contemporary still life painting of books and a hat on a chair next to an open window with a white curtain and the beach outside. Despite the beauty of the images, he later recalled, "I found that my faithless pencil had only left traces on the paper melancholy to behold." He speculated "how charming it would be to cause these images to imprint themselves durably, and remain fixed upon the paper! And why should it not be possible?" But, in an age in which skill at drawing was highly prized, Talbot was a terrible draughtsman. In 1833, while on honeymoon in Italy, William Henry Fox Talbot tried to sketch the landscape surrounding Lake Como with the aid of a camera lucida. 'We are not lucky people as a rule, Gentle Reader, you and I, but the good things and the pretty things of this life - which seem to be pitched about in a haphazard sort of way - must fall into someones lap, and our turn has come. Props: A modern-day letter, signed at the bottom. Say: Everyone open your Bibles to the book of Daniel. (You may want to say: It’s about 2/3 from the front of your Bible.) Keep your Bibles open there.įor the last several weeks, we have studied the Israelites as they were kidnapped and taken to Babylon. The Babylonians did not worship the one true God. They worshipped many false gods and idols. Their King, Nebuchadnezzar (Neh-byoo-kuhd-NEHZ-er), was a very powerful man who also worshipped false gods and idols. However, God had a plan to reveal Himself to King Nebuchadnezzar. God saw to it that Nebuchadnezzar’s path crossed with some of His few faithful followers, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Jeremiah 25:11, Daniel 1:2). By watching the relationship that these men had with the living God, King Nebuchadnezzar learned more and more about their God. In Daniel 1, Daniel and his friends decided ahead of time not to disobey God by eating the King’s food. Because they obeyed God and depended on Him, God gave them great wisdom. King Nebuchadnezzar found that these Israelites were ten times wiser than all of the His other wise men. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God’s men. Then, in Daniel 2, the Lord gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream that only Daniel could interpret. Daniel made it very clear that the dream and the interpretation had come for the one true God. Through this dream, King Nebuchadnezzar learned that only God’s Kingdom will last forever. The King learned that God is wise and He reveals truth. So King Nebuchadnezzar admitted that Daniel’s God was the best of all the “gods.”įinally, last week we studied Daniel 3. In the fiery furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar saw that the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego was faithful He could do what none of his “gods” could do - God could rescue His people. Nebuchadnezzar saw that the Lord would step into a blazing furnace to be with those who trust in Him. So King Nebuchadnezzar made a law that no one could speak against the God of Israel.Īll of these were steps toward knowing God, but Nebuchadnezzar did not yet understand that God was the ONLY God and that He was in control of EVERYTHING. A good rule of thumb is the darker the tequila is typically correlates with how long it has been aging. This resposado tequila is different when compared to clear tequila that typically will only rest from 4 weeks to 2 months. Reposado means “rested” so these specific tequilas sit between 2 – 11 months in their barrels before being bottled and they have a darker hue because of this. The first, and most important, is the type of tequila you use when creating your margarita. Two Things Every Cadillac Margarita Needs What is a Cadillac Margarita? How is this different from a traditional margarita? In order for your beverage to be a traditional Cadillac Margarita there are two things you must have. File chunking is the process of breaking down files into smaller chunks that can transfer individually. In addition to collaborations with Thomas, James also worked with none other than The King, Elvis Presley. Thomas released the original version of the song, which was written by Mark James. It was also included in the soundtrack of the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.Several years before, in 1968, country and pop singer B.J. The band’s second and last LP Out of the Blue saw them doing a medley of Deep Purple’s “Hush” and Tommy James and the Shondell’s “I’m Alive.” These two mashed-up songs was released as one single, which peaked at #61 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it even more so became a bigger chart back home in their native Scandinavia region.Įnduring popularity of Blue Swede’s version of “Hooked on a Feeling”īlue Suede’s cover of “Hooked on a Feeling” experienced a revival especially during the 1990s, when it was included on the soundtrack of Reservoir Dogs, and especially the on the popular TV series Ally McBeal‘s “dancing baby” part. It was quickly followed by their cover of the Association’s “Never My Love” (written by Dick and Don Addrisi) which gave them their second and final Top 10 pop hit in America. Later also in 1974, Blue Swede’s follow-up single “Silly Milly” reached #71 on the US Billboard Hot 100, a minor hit. The single’s popularity pushed the album, also titled Hooked on a Feeling, up on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at #80 there. In the UK, it was almost an inch away from topping the chart, if not for British native King’s version. It also went to #1 in other countries such as Canada, Australia and Holland. Rather unexpectedly perhaps, it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it also went to #31 on the adult contemporary singles chart). The band also modified the lyrics to differ from the original version, in order to dodge a drug reference.Įventually, Blue Swede recorded and released their own version of “Hooked on a Feeling” (complete with the “ooga-chaka ooga-chaka” intro) first in their native country in the spring of 1973, and then in the US in early 1974. Thomas number entitled “Hooked on a Feeling,” but followed British singer Jonathan King’s more eccentric version with the “ooga-chaka ooga-chaka” introduction. In 1974, Blue Swede achieved their real first international break when they did a cover of B.J. Initially the band called themselves Blåblus (meaning “blue blouse” or “blue jeans,” emphasizing the “blues”). It was founded by its frontman Bjorn Skifs, who was then one of the top singers in the country. Here you will find videos, resources, articles, news and much more all about Blue Swede.įormation, early years and their famous cover version of “Hooked on a Feeling”īlue Swede is a pop-rock band formed in Stockholm, Sweden during the 70s music era. They also had another top 10 US pop hit with another cover song, “Never My Love” in 1975. It is probably the most famous version of that tune, thanks to Ally McBeal. Thomas song “Hooked on a Feeling” which has become a popular classic oldies favorite. They achieved fame via their hit cover of B. Blue Swede is a short-lived Swedish classic rock and pop band hailing from Stockholm. Stroke has been the worldwide leading cause of disability and mortality ( World Health Organization, 2019). The prevalence of age-related chronic diseases such as stroke is anticipated to increase steeply as the global population rapidly ages ( James et al., 2018). Virtually every country in the world is experiencing a shift in the age distribution of its population toward older ages ( United Nations, 2019). The contributed method and findings help recapitulate and understand the post-stroke motor recovery process, which may facilitate developing more effective rehabilitation strategies for future stroke survivors. A quality comparison between muscle synergies computed with the conventional within-task peak/mean EMG normalization and our proposed method showed that the conventional was prone to activation amplitude overestimation and underestimation. Quantitative results of patients suggest that maximum muscle tension and activation level of muscle synergy temporal patterns may reflect the effectiveness of subacute stroke rehabilitation. Serial STS measurements were conducted with four post-stroke patients during their subacute rehabilitation stay (137 ± 22 days) in the hospital. The proposed joint torque-based method was also compared with the common static optimization based on squared muscle activation and showed higher simulation accuracy overall. The novel method was validated against MVC-normalized EMG data from eight healthy participants, and it retained muscle activation amplitude differences for inter- and intra-subject comparisons. Next, upon method validation, we apply it to quantify changes in muscle tension and muscle synergy activation levels in STS motor control units for patients in subacute stroke rehabilitation. Here, focusing on the paretic side, we first propose a novel, joint torque-based normalization method that incorporates musculoskeletal modeling, forward dynamics simulation, and mathematical optimization. However, current normalization methods using maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) or within-task peak/mean EMG may not be feasible when MVC cannot be obtained from stroke survivors due to motor paralysis and the subject of comparison is EMG amplitude. To better enable a longitudinal investigation into a patient's muscle activation changes during rehabilitation or an inter-subject comparison, EMG normalization is usually applied. Although some qualitative findings are available, it is not clear if and how muscle activation amplitude-related biomechanical attributes may quantitatively reflect during subacute stroke rehabilitation. Muscle activation amplitude, related to muscle tension and muscle synergy activation levels, is one of the defining EMG features that reflects post-stroke motor functioning and motor impairment. Post-stroke patients exhibit distinct muscle activation electromyography (EMG) features in sit-to-stand (STS) due to motor deficiency. 6Department of Rehabilitation, University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan.5College of Information Technology, United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.4Department of Physical Therapy, Saitama Prefectural University, Saitama, Japan.3RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Aichi, Japan.2Department of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.1Department of Precision Engineering, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.Yamasaki 4, Moeka Yokoyama 3, Fady Alnajjar 3,5, Noriaki Hattori 6, Kouji Takahashi 7, Takanori Fujii 7, Hironori Otomune 7, Ichiro Miyai 7, Atsushi Yamashita 1 and Hajime Asama 1 Ruoxi Wang 1, Qi An 2 *, Ningjia Yang 3, Hiroki Kogami 1, Kazunori Yoshida 1, Hiroshi Yamakawa 1, Hiroyuki Hamada 1, Shingo Shimoda 3, Hiroshi R. |
